A Tale of Changing Names

There was one among the Uratha, known to the spirits by the name Strikes with Fury. A ingenuous alpha, he was ceded territory by a pack departing for war. Another pack, too, was gifted with territory, and their Cahalith swore an oath to the elder pack to guard a place within the territory of Strikes with Fury. This was known to the latter and, for a time, the young wolf was allowed to go unmolested in the fulfilment of this obligation.

But bitterness came between these gifted packs, as is wont to happen among the Uratha. Lines were drawn, and contests were held as territory was divided. The bitterness grew, and sacred duties were neglected. The locus originally held by Strikes with Fury changed hands between his pack and a Pure pack, and then was claimed by a powerful spirit of corruption. This spirit was a symptom of a greater problem, also caused by neglect, for the locus was slowly but surely turning to a Wound.

Prideful and naïve, Strikes with Fury offered violence to valid criticism. Attempts to help were treated as hostile acts, attempts to reason gave rise to irrational bickering. Annoyed by the futility of these exchanges, and the lack of action taken by that alpha, the Cahalith of the other pack spoke with the spirits. Equally unimpressed, the spirits decided another name was more apt, and they renamed the alpha Sound and Fury.

Sound and Fury was unimpressed, but try as he might he could not shake the name. Even more furious, he cursed the young wolf, and threatened his pack. He demanded that they undo the what their youngest wrought on his name, and in doing so further cemented it. He threatened the safety of the Cahalith, and promised violence should the youth enter the place he was sworn to protect. Away at war, the elder pack heard of the sins and failings of Sound and Fury, and they returned. Though they settled other matters themselves, he refused to admit that he had done any wrong against the Cahalith. A lune was summoned under the half moon, and it was asked to hear the story of each. The young Cahalith offered his version of events, of the aid his pack had given to the other, and of how he had respected the territory of the other pack each time he entered. Sound and Fury conceded that all that had been said was true, but claimed that the youth could, nonetheless, not be trusted. He spoke drivel to it, and it grew impatient. He bickered with it, and it grew angry. He offered it lies, and it saw through them. And it said that he was the one not to be trusted, and ruled that he was bound to allow safe passage to the Cahalith.

But even after this, Sound and Fury was unapologetic, and so the Cahalith of two other packs, who had born witness to his dishonour, came to the first. Together the three summoned a spirit, one whose voice would be heard across great distances, and again a new name was offered for this Uratha. The spirit, pleased by this new name, and by generous offering, spread the name far and wide. And that is how the one once known as Strikes with Fury, came to bear the name Speaks Nonsense at Lunes.
