Ames and Northwest Iowa
A diverse, fast-paced college town in the heart of the American midwest, Ames and Northwest Iowa offer both education and insulation; ties to blood and the land, and pathways to the world; isolated farmsteads, and introverted research labs; flashes of innovation and the arts, and the darkened windows of recluse small towns.
News, Rumors & Events
Rumors and Current Events are available at the beginning of each game to the public, through play, and through downtime actions dedicated to gathering more information yourself or through others.
- The police recently made a huge drug bust at a local "no tell" hotel. The night manager of the hotel called the police, reporting suspicious activity near room 12. He reported an assault and truck theft, but when the police arrived they found the manager so impossibly high that they just took him in. Massive amounts of weed were found on the scene and confiscated. The manager also had $1000 in cash on him.
- Interesting litter has been showing up all over Ames. Strange posters litter the streets and trashcans of the city. They are not actually taped up anyplace, they are more discarded like used pamphlets or newspapers. Apparently they are handing them out at that hot new club, Red Rain. If you are walking the parts of town where the homeless dwell, you might even see a wild haired drunk midget using them as improvised blankets.
The posters are 8 by 11 inch sheets of paper with a giant orange sunburst blaring out from the center bottom. A smiling cartoon character of a casually dressed bearded man is shooting out of the middle of the design, giving a thumbs up. He's flanked by another cartoon character Lionel of the Thundercats as well as a monster made out of sausages.
Printed boldly at the top of the poster is "Beaumontia: It's fucking scenic."
- The police are in a bit of a tizzy. A recent string of sexual assaults on a secluded Ames bicycle trail has led to a failed police sting. The undercover officer - also known as the bait - was walking alone when she broke radio contact. Other officers rushed to the scene to find Detective Jennifer Vanco unconsious. Police believe that the would-be rapist noticed Detective Vanco's earpiece and fled the scene. Vanco was held overnight at the hospital for observation and then given a week off to recover before returning to work.
- Several ISU students are excited. About 40 minutes to the south in a town called Norwalk there is a weekend celebration of the old 1980's cartoon Thundercats.
- On I-35 heading north, a sign that usually says "Slater 12 miles" has been vandalized. It now says "Beaumontia 12 miles". The sign was barely up for a day before it was removed.
- There has been a shortage of glow sticks and other rave paraphernalia. It must be that place Red Rain. Business has been booming there. In fact coming up soon the place is holding a charity fundraiser for a local hospital. This "Medicine Ball" is going to be a cost free mixer for patients struck with terrible diseases.
- The local pagan and witchcraft store Bethany's Gifts & Curiosities has leaving posters around campus lately. Apparently the store is beginning some Wicca 101 type classes and is looking for students.
- In recent weeks there has been a media blitz of advertising for that new techno dance club Red Rain. There has been ads on the radio, late night television, billboards, the sides of buses, and even on the back rest of park benches.
- Locals know not to wander into the woods of Brookside Park - unless you've brought something the "crows" will like. I'll give you a hint - it's not birdseed.
- A family thirty miles outside Jewell hears noises coming from their abandoned barn. They don't talk about it - or about what comes through the empty doorframe.
- If you know the right people, you can find parties the cops will never find. They can get wild - but you can handle wild, right?
- I knew a woman that "saw things". Since she checked into the hospital, though, she only seems to have gotten worse.
- What will you discover in Ames and Northwest Iowa? Will it be enough to keep you ahead of the race - or do you even know you're in it? Are you ready to run? ...
Important Locations
Ames and the smaller Fort Dodge are population centers in the heavily farmed region. Many off-the-beaten-path locations claim some historic significance, whether pioneer, landmark, native or modern, or some homespun legend, although just as many keep to themselves and would rather others do the same.
The narrow band of the Des Moines River Valley cuts through the area, northwest to southeast, in a series of state forests and craggy parks, including Ledges State Park.
- Iowa State University
Ames is home to Iowa State University and about 30,000 students, who just barely outnumber the permenent residents. The interests and fast-pace of the student population define much of Ames, attracting activities and academic concerns that otherwise wouldn't exist here. Founded in 1858, ISU is best known for its programs in design, science, engineering, and agriculture.
- Downtown Ames
Main Street offers locals a place away from rowdy Campustown, and old, personal shops you can't find at North Grand Mall. Western bars, pool halls, seedy hole-in-the-wall joints, upscale bar/restaurants, abandoned back alleys, block parks, strip clubs, cafes and best-kept-secrets all have a place in Downtown. This area is frequented by permanent residents and some older students.
City Hall, the police station, established business and service offices, centers such as soup kitchens can be found here.
- Campustown
Weekend nights, the bars and clubs of Campustown on Welsh Avenue are packed. There are also many different cultural centers, churches, transient offices manned by student interns such as volunteer centers and political campaign centers, ethnic restaurants, novelty shops and tattoo parlors. Located right across the street from the largest residence hall on campus and near all the Greek houses, this is the place to find student specials, attention-grabbing stunts and events, crowded dance floors, and occasionally, drunken riots.
The Domain of Des Moines is 30 minutes to the south and the Domain of Iowa City is about two hours to the east.

"It's a great huge game of chess that's being played -- all over the world --if this is the world at all, you know. Oh what fun it is! How I wish I was one of them! I wouldn't mind being a Pawn, if only I might join - though of course I should like to be Queen best." - Alice before she meets the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass |
