Physical appearance: Butterfly is very slender blue-eyed blonde, standing at just 5'6" high. She dresses in a black T-shirt with a large blue butterfly across the chest, black layed skirt, laddered black tights, black Docs with pink bootlaces, black veil with silver sparkles over her hair (but when she's being serious or working on her projects she pulls the veil off her face/hair and leaves it to sit around her shoulders), butterfly hair clip holding her hair back from her face, various items of jewelry all featuring butterflies, butterfly nail decals, a locket, and a ring set with three gemstones. She also carries around what looks like a perspex rod on a multicoloured wrist strap.

She's a teenage science prodigy specialising in chemistry, and she believes that understanding chemistry is the key to full understanding of the Matter Arcanum, and vice versa. She also firmly believes that there is no difference between magic and science, it's just a matter of helping everyone else to understand that...

Character History

Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Ainsley was the youngest of three children. A scary-smart child, Ainsley soon surpassed the other children her age, then found herself bored so did a lot of home-study, resulting in her being skipped ahead grades. Her father's company transferred him to Edinburgh when she was nine, shortly before she was diagnosed with a leukemia, and she spent the next few years in and out of hospital in Edinburgh undergoing treatments and operations. During one operation, Ainsley died on the operating table. Doctors tried to resuscitate her before finally declaring her dead, then as they went to remove the life monitoring equipment her heart miraculously started again and they successfully finished the operation.

During the brief period in which she was dead, Ainsley travelled through Stygia to the Watchtower of the Lead Coin, where she inscribed her name just before she returned to her body and began to breathe again. As she recovered from this literally life-changing operation she met her first mentor, an Awakened working as a doctor who introduced her to both Awakened society and the Free Council. Taking the shadow name Butterfly to signify rebirth and metamorphosis, Ainsley threw herself into learning magic with the same passion she had for her schoolwork, quickly observing the similarities between the Matter Arcanum and her pet subject of chemistry, and developing her theory -- which soon turned into a strongly held belief -- that magic and science are the same thing.

Butterfly never really got involved with her local Consilium's business, preferring to concentrate on her studies both magical and mundane, and dealing with her family. Her miraculous recovery in the operating theatre, coupled with that being the successful operation that finally removed the entire tumour and a touch of Life magic that kept it from coming back, had essentially split her family. Her mother praised it as modern medicine, while her father praised God and became super-religious. She and her siblings tried to keep out of it while their parents' marriage tore itself apart, finally ending in divorce. Her mother gained custody of Butterfly, accepted a job in Melbourne, Australia, and moved, taking Butterfly with her. Her father remained in Scotland and her two elder siblings, both adults, also chose to stay. Butterfly had just passed her A-levels and was accepted into the University of Melbourne, taking up classes at mid-year when she arrived in the county.

Shortly after arriving, Butterfly managed to get into contact with Constance, Free Council ambassador to the Melbourne Consilium, who took Butterfly under her wing. Constance introduced her to the rest of the Consilium, and essentially adopted Butterfly. After meeting with Butterfly's mother, Constance convinced Ms McArthur to let Butterfly live most of the time with Constance, as Ms McArthur worked long days and often the weekends as well, and shortly afterwards Butterfly moved into Constance's Sanctum, which soon became her Sanctum as well. Some months later, shortly after the disappearance of the Hierarch Lucius, the interim Hierarch Wolfe's assumption that Butterfly was Constance's apprentice led the two to formalise what had unofficially grown over the past few months, and Constance took Butterfly as her apprentice. A few months later, after issues with Timelines were resolved at the cost of Wolfe sacrificing himself to remain in a stasis Realm and the Consilium members who were there were scattered as they left, Constance decided to retire from the Consilium again and take up life as a tree for awhile, leaving their Sanctum and responsibility for Melbourne's Free Council in Butterfly's hands. Butterfly tried to get as many members of the Consilium together as possible and begin to investigate problems within Melbourne such as murders with Awakened symbology, spirits going nuts, and Twilight looking like a bomb went off. She also received a mysterious message telling her to go to Canberra, along with a plane ticket, where she participated in a meeting of Awakened from across Australia and took a new treaty home to her Consilium.

The few Awakened still gathering to form the Melbourne Consilium decided shortly after Canberra to finally accept that it seemed Hierarch Lucius wasn't returning for awhile, and to appoint a new Hierarch. Butterfly was nominated by the local Guardians of the Veil, with the nomination seconded by her cabalmate and bodyguard Gambit. Fully aware of the irony of the Guardians nominating a Free Councillor for Hierarch, Butterfly reluctantly accepted nomination even as she seconded the nomination of the Consilium's Sentinel, Jet. Just as the election between the two started, Hierarch Lucius walked through the door, to the relief of Butterfly and Jet who both immediately stood down from the election. Reforming the Council with Councillors for each Path, Lucius appointed Butterfly as Moros Councillor on Jet's advice. Butterfly and Gambit held a fund-raiser in Melbourne in June, inviting Awakened from all over the country. Two of the attendees were Kain Wells and Puck, whose behaviour on the night led Butterfly and the other members of the Consilium Council who were present to banish Kain and Puck from Melbourne. About 10 months ago, shortly after Gambit formed a cabal with her, Butterfly set aside her chemistry experiments in order to build things. She couldn't stop designing and building things, and in fact didn't even know how she knew to build them, she just knew how to get them to work, although everyone else who looked at her blueprints couldn't understand them at all.

Butterfly and Gambit went missing in November, with Gambit resurfacing in January saying he'd just awoken from a coma and couldn't find Butterfly. Baseline located her being held in a coma by the local Guardian of the Veil cabal, the Cabal of Tranquility, who had a history of being at severe odds with Butterfly's cabal -- normally because Butterfly and Gambit would pull them up for Veil breaches, openly made it clear that Melbourne's Free Council (ie, them) often had to clean up GotV messes, and generally called the GotV on being idiots. A small group of Free Councillors and friends rescued her in February and took her to Sydney, where she recovered under Rosethorn's care before returning to Melbourne.

Upon her return to Melbourne, she notified Hierarch Lucius that she wished nothing to do with the Consilium of the Tower while the Cabal of Tranquility was still part of it, and withdrew from all Consilium politics and activities. For almost a year she quietly kept to herself in her Sanctum and continued her university studies, until the Cabal of Tranquility split from the Consilium to form their own Consilium. Upon this happening, Butterfly returned to active participation in the Consilium of the Tower, taking up her position as Moros Councillor once more.

Not long after this Butterfly turned 18, inviting both her Consilium and the Free Council in general to attend a celebration at her Sanctum. It was during the festivities that assassination attempts were made on both Butterfly and Lucius, only to be thwarted by Gambit, the newly-returned Wolfe, and Abel Wells. While no conclusive evidence was found as to who was behind it, some members of the Consilium jumped to the conclusion that it was the Cabal of Tranquility. When later in the day a murdered mage was discovered displayed on the wall in Butterfly's home and Abel claimed that that was the work of a Guardian of the Veil, an already upset and angry Butterfly declared that with the exceptions of Abel and Wolfe, no Guardians of the Veil were welcome in her Sanctum, and that she would kill any who entered without her permission.

In the months since, Butterfly has been dealing with the loss of her close friend and almost-boyfriend Baseline, along with her universtiy studies, and her role within the Consilium. Most recently, she has been investigating the spread of a new and highly dangerous drug causing rioting and death amongst Sleepers, with her investigations so far suggesting that it has been magically created.

Quotes by the Flutterby

"Do ye ken that saying 'any technology sufficiently advanced be indistinguishable from magic'? Wouldnae that also be 'magic be indistinguishable from sufficiently advanced technology' -- or science? So what be the difference between magic and science or technology, then? I dinnae see one."

"Can't sleep, clowns will eat me." - In response to being asked why she was still awake at 2am.

"The only difference between Guardians of the Veil and Seers of the Throne is that the Guardians dinnae openly follow the Exarchs."

Rumors

  • Butterfly is actually an Acanthus who claims to be a Moros for reasons of her own.
  • Her mentor Constance has driven Butterfly insane.
  • Constance appointed Butterfly as her successor as Thyrsus Councillor, despite the little problem of Butterfly not being a Thyrsus.
  • Butterfly is really an actual butterfly that Constance turned human using the Life Arcanum.
  • Butterfly's veil has a ghost or a spirit inside it that talks to her.
  • Butterfly is Gambit's daughter.
  • Butterfly is Gambit's mother in the future.
  • Butterfly has a crush on Baseline and wants him to join the Free Council so that he can be a member of her cabal.
  • Butterfly enjoys driving Gambit crazy.
  • Butterfly has been possessed by an Abyssal entity.
  • The items that Butterfly has been designing and building are all heavily Abyss-tainted, and spread the taint to whoever uses them.
  • The real purpose behind Butterfly's rescue was for the Free Council to take her into custody and cleanse her of taint.
  • While staying with Rosethorn in early 2009, Butterfly was under suicide watch by three Masters.
  • Given both their significant age difference and which Orders they belong to, does anyone else find the interactions between Butterfly and Wolfe odd...and slightly disturbing?
