Tales about Mal Richards first put him on a tramp steamer owned by a pack of Storm Lords back around 1990. He has spent most of his life at sea trading and fighting his way across the Pacific, Indian and other oceans.
The Serene is Mal's fourth pack and the second he has been Alpha of. Previously he has worked for many different people and a number of different causes. From smuggling refugees out of North Korea, Burma and China, to fighting alongside various factions along the southern borders of the former USSR. As well as being a veteran of the South China Sea Wars.
He found the Serene in a junk yard several years ago having heard her calling to him. Along with several others he patched her up and set out to make a life for himself and his crew where ever there was work.
Often accused by others of being a mercenary or a pirate he reacts badly to such terms instead pointing out the many jobs he has done pro bono over the years as evidence of his charitable nature. Especially the many times he has stood in harm's way to help protect the territory of others from the Hosts, Incarna or worse.
Mal has recently declared that the Serene pack sundered and released the crew from his leadership. This hasn't gone down well with some of his former packmates but Mal seems determined to free of them. This hasn't done anything good to his mood though it seems.
He is one of the Locksmith's Eyeguard now. However he hasn't been seen by any Uratha since then, rumour suggests he may have gone on his Last Mile.
Mal returned to Forsaken eyes briefly in October 2008 to aid in a fight against an entity known as the Abyss in Essex, he aided in the fight before heading off again.
Finally in Jan 2009 he resurfaced again stating that he had returned from his Last Mile and had not only learnt the True Name of the Idigam known as Breathstealer but also had a plan to defeat it. His whereabouts are currently subject to change as he tries to keep one step ahead of the servants of the Idigam which also knows he has this information.
Recognised as K'ruuk, a member of the Lodge of Scars.

Background
Known History:
Born and raised on a farm somewhere in West Africa, Mal occasionally mentions a couple of years in an english boarding school which ended badly. He doesn't often talk about his family and claims to have run away to sea shortly after his first change at the age of 17.
The Serene is his third or fourth Pack and not his first as Alpha. His previous pack worked across Korea and SE Asia in various less than legal activities in the mid to late 1990s. Also during this time Mal made a name for himself during the South China Sea Wars from 1997-2001.
Chances are he's been most places in the world at some point though.

- "We didn't speak the last time we met...it's probably best that way." - Hama
- "I gave him Zacharas message.. honest.. just verbally.. He's um.. another Stormlord.." Tyr

- "Mal worries me. He has so few challenges that he can wrest with that I feel he lacks purpose, sometimes - simply existing. And no, I don't count Breathstealer." - Jay Pathfinder

Tales of Renown
Glory 4 Tale
The Giant Rats of Sumatra (1997/8): In late August of 97 Mal and his new pack became aware of a number of unusal shipping requests being routed out of a small firm based on Sumatra. It seemed that a series of normal cargo runs across the Indonesian pensulia were making unscheduled stops at a small island just off the coast of New Guinea. At first he just suspected them of being smugglers and thought little of it until November of that year when the first stories concerning giant rats began to slip out in some of the more disreputable bars in Java. In the first week of December Mal and his pack raided the offices of the shipping company looking for clues in the ship manifests. Instead they encountered a nest of Beshilu operating out of warehouses, including some that had become hybrids with the managers of the shipping company. A ‘small’ firefight ensues in which somehow the shipping offices and warehouses catch fire. Mal’s Pack escape with minor wounds and charts and manifests that indicate a wider problem. It becomes apparent that the Beshilu in the area have been co-operating on a scale few have seen before and have been shipping large numbers of themselves to a small, barely inhabited island just off the major shipping lanes. The captured documents do not contain any details about why the Rats are doing this but everyone assumes the worst. Mal contacts his old mentor Harbadkin and arranges for the two packs to travel to the mysterious usland. A few days later Mal and his Pack land on the Island for what he has termed a recon mission. What they find goes beyond even their worst nightmares. The entire island has been over run by the Rats, the local population all killed or being worn by rats. Further investigation inland reveals the rat’s full plan. In a series of caves inland the rats have made a massive nest, containing thousands of Gnawers and several giant rats larger than any seen before. Also within the hearts of the caves there were an incresing number of spirits as the gnawers had done serious damage to the guantlet here and the damage was rapidly spreading. Returning to the baot with the information Mal and Harbadkin determine that the Beshilu need to be destroyed right now before they suceeded in collapsing the guantlet across the whole island and releasing untold hordes of spirits into the surrounding area. Deciding that they were was no time to delay and call for more packs to assist Mal leads his pack in a raid on the caves while Harbadkin and his pack hold the perimeter. There followed a daring raid on the island as Mal leads his pack through the local fishing village where they encounter a number of Hybrids and then on into the caves. Once at the caves the pack plant a series of mundane explosive and incendiary devices to collapse the caves and then slipping into the Hisil they place a series of marker stones prepared by the two packs Ithauers to strenghten the guantlet once more. Discovered during this phase of the mission the pack then find themselves having to fight their way clear of the caves before the ecplosives can be charges. Mal loses two packmates in this fight but manages to lead the remaining three other members out of the caves and detonates the charges, destroying the remaining belishu is fire before bringing the caves down on them.
Purity 4 Tale
Below is the extract from the South China Sea Wars document relating to Mal's Purity 4 Renown. For upholding the Oath and his Harmony whilst being tortured by Niska and the Pure and for restraining himself from killing another werewolf (Niska) even though he had just murdered Mal's mentor as it would have broken the Oath.
Niska and the Burmese Front (1999/2000): Returning to Korea from doing some ‘freedom fighting’ in the southern former soviet republics Mal once again hooks up with Hope and with her forms a new pack with the express purpose of finishing off business for the Syndicate once and for all. Using the information he had gained whilst working for them the previous year and new information that Hope has since discovered he intends to disrupt their arms and drugs trade in and out of Burma once and for all. Hope has found links back to those funding the Syndicate’s operations from across the Burmese border. Mal and his new pack lead a raid on several syndicate border camps before heading across into Burma proper – illegally of course. They track the finances back to a central figure who it turns out is in fact Hithimu (ridden) and using the drugs traffick to prime further targets to be Ridden by his allies in the Hisil. After a close run battle Mal and his pack overcome the Ridden and his allies, they destroy the drugs plantation and the supply network he was using and head off with a large amount of cash for later use. They begin to track down the rest of the shipments that had been recently sent across the border, destroying the drug caches they find before they can be used to further the spirit invasion. Several of the drug caches are serving as fetters for spirits trying to find a host. By late 1999 Mal and his pack have tracked down and dealt with the remaining elements of the Syndicate and they return to Korea where the pack splits up for a while as Mal again refuses to settle to one territory. However unknown to Mal and his pack the Hithimu had other allies not linked to the drugs network, namely a sponsoring pack of Pure lead by Niska. They are understandably upset that one of their more promising spirit allies has been neutralised and set out to take revenge for this. Niska however also recognises the potential of the Uratha who was responsible for this and determines to try and convert Mal to the Pure way so that they can then be used to then kill his pack mates from the operation. In Fenbruary 2000 Niska and his pack locate Mal and manage to capture him taking him back across the Burmese border to their home territory. There they subject him to torture and brainwashing in an effort to turn him from the Oath of the Moon. They only offer him human flesh to eat, try to make him attack and potentially kill another captive they have in routine arena fights and generally attempt to force him into breaking the Oath and degrading his Harmony. Mal resists as much as he can but suffers greatly for it. Meanwhile Hope manages to get a message about what has happened to Mal through to his old mentor Harbadkin who subsequently launches a rescue mission. They arrive at Niska’s territory 18 days after Mal’s capture and battle is joined. During the confusion Mal manages to break free from his cell and tracks down Niska. Due in part to his injuries Mal seems unable to enter death rage once he confronts Niska and attacks him, yet Mal holds back in a calculated attack designed to prove to his torturer that even after all that Niska has put him through he is still determined to uphold the Oath of the Moon and not kill another werewolf. Mal instead enacts the old testament creed of an eye for an eye and rips out Niska’s left eye before informing him that he is not going to kill him but instead will let the others take him away to be dealt with. As Mal is doing this Harbadkin arrives and holds back as Mal makes his ‘Oath’ speech to Niska before collapsing from exhaustion. Harbadkin moves in to ensure that Niska is finally captured and it is at this point that Niska draws on hidden reserves of strenght and kills Harbadkin. Mal, unable to react through total physical exhaustion can do nothing but watch as his mentor is ripped about by Niska in mere seconds. Niska then turns to finish Mal, calling him a misguided fool etc, before the rest of Harbakin’s pack arrive and Niska flees rather than face several Uratha in full frenzy. Mal is returned to Harbadkin’s ship to recover from his wounds and attend to Harbadkin’s funeral rites. In late March he is well enough to leave the ship and meets up with Hope again. Using the cash they previously liberated from the Syndicate to travel to the UK to pass news on to Harbadkin’s family of his demise. They also get involved in some local matters (2005 National Game).
Cunning 3
Needing to find the weakness of the Idigam now as Souleater or Khan Mal hit upon a strange plan. Knowing the mind of the Idigam was bound in one location and eager to gather the rest of its shattered self to it Mal offered it a bargain it couldn't turn down. Mal tricked the Idigam into revealing to him how to learn its Bans and True Name which helped the Forsaken of the UK to defeat it.
Honour 4
Mal has consistently over the years he has lead the Serene pack travelled the globe to stand beside many other packs and groups of Uratha as they have been threatened by danger and enemies. He has stood in active defence of territories that were not his own, that he had no interest in taking and for no personal gain to see off attacks by Pure, Hosts, Spirits and Idigam all because he sees it as part of the duty he has to the People and his Oath. These have included recently, helping Birmingham deal with a Beshilu infestation and attacks by servants of an Idigam, Assisting in the assualt on the undersea village where Breathstealer was holding the Incarna Old Man River, aiding the Uratha of Canada deal with the problem in London. Standing with the Uratha of London (UK) against the warring Pure and Coldfire and several other examples throughout his life. All just for a thank you and sometimes not even that.
