Mr. Poe and the dead Toe
It was but a month after Toe had received his Masters from Yale, and Toe was laying awake in a hospital bed in the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven. It was 11:59 PM, and Toe couldn’t sleep. He was in recovery of his latest operation, an invasive surgery to remove the cancer from his lungs. The clock struck midnight, and without a second passing the door to Toe’s private room opened. A runt of a man walked through the door, he was balding, wearing a grungy blue nurse’s uniform, and had about 15 or so watches on each arm. One watch stood out in particular as it seemed to be stuck on inglow, it was the exact same watch Toe wore. He spoke in a nasally voice.
“Can’t sleep? Don’t answer. My name is Poe, and I am here to save you, I am your salvation. I know you don’t want to die and that it why you are going to follow me. Get up, we are leaving.”
Toe didn’t know why he trusted this man, but he did, with all his heart. He sat up and pulled the IV from his arm, at this point he thanked god his catheter had been removed earlier in the day. He could feel his chest through the drug haze, it felt tight. He knew he wasn’t quite right because of the drugs, but he trusted this man. He fallowed the man through the quiet halls of the hospital. As he made his way to the elevator to the lobby a nurse tried to verbally stop him, but edict stated she couldn’t touch him, so she called someone who could. They made their way to the Grove Street Cemetery, next to Yale. It was a long walk, made longer by Toe’s condition. Thankfully, considering Toe was still wearing a hospital gown, they didn’t see many people. After about an hour they made it to the cemetery without altercation. Poe lead the way to a respectable black marble grave someone towards the center of the grounds. The grave read, Requiescat In Pace – Avery Kingston – Loved Son – 1979-2005. He wasn’t shocked, he had accepted his death already. Poe’s nasally voice chimed in once more.
“But I can save you, will you look upon the Tower of the Lead Coin and save yourself?”
Toe had no clue what this man spoke of, but he trusted him, so he agreed. A mist he had not noticed parted behind his grave and an omniscient tower that he knew wasn’t there gazed down on him. A pedestal with an ancient tome lay before him; he knew what he had to do. Above the book was a knife and quill, he drew blood from his finger and signed the book.
“The Path of Doom is not the one that will save you though; you must seek out the walkers of the Path of Ecstasy.”
Toe turned to ask what Poe meant, but Poe was nowhere to be seen. A squad car was parked a little ways away and an officer was on his radio. Toe lost consciousness and when he awoke he was back in his hospital bed, now restrained. They said it was an adverse reaction to the medication, and Toe was forever changed.
