Dark Ages: Mage is a game of magic and conflict set in the dark ages. The default setting is AD 1230, during the early years of the Holy Office of the Inquisition. It is an era before the Council of Nine Mystick Traditions has formed, and the forces of order and science are only beginning to struggle against those of superstition and magic.

Setting

The setting for Dark Ages: Mage is Europe, AD 1230, during the early years of the Holy Office of the Inquisition. The history is based on real world events, but with a hidden supernatural influence. The history is based on the real world but has an undercurrent of magic and the super-natural that has been operating behind the sceens. In general the setting is refered to as Dark Fantastical, as opposed to the Gothic-Punk title of the modern Old World of Darkness games.

Dark Ages: Mage utilizes resources released for Dark Ages: Vampire primarily, and also Dark Ages: Werewolf (especially spirits). The setting is, as all Old World of Darkness settings were, mostly independent of the other Dark Ages lines, but by this point White Wolf rhetoric had dropped the innate assumption that troupes were playing in completely independent worlds of the other lines. This was compounded with the fact that the actual rules of play were all contained in Dark Ages: Vampire, and several references in Dark Ages: Mage included Vampire-specific details (like the Order of Hermes Massasa war).
