Through the Looking Glass

The night was damp and the light rain was just coming to a stop. He stood in the dirty alleyway watching the door to the bar. A neon light shone above that door illuminating his gaze and the cold steel of the magnum rested in his hand. The others waited nearby with the sprayers full of gasoline and a fistful of road flares. All he had to do was lure the beast into the alleyway. A bullet to the skull should accomplish the task. Sinning in the name of God was not the easiest way to work for the clergy, but better the shepherd to dirty his hands than the flock. It was his purpose. He committed these acts so that others needn’t taint their consciences with such things. He kept thinking to himself “look at the neck…aim for the head….and whatever you do, don’t look him in the eyes”. The door opened. It was time.
Before the Fall
|
Jason was born the son of a wealthy shipping magnate, Michael Whitfield Jr. and his wife Sarah. They lived a life of luxury and ease. His parents owned houses in several major cities including Chicago, New York, and Rome. They traveled frequently on business trips of which Jason knew little. His parents were secretly benefactors to the MM and the whole family were of course devout Catholics.
Jason was an an accomplished child. He was considered a prodigy in some ways. Jason began competitive shooting at the age of 10 in his father’s country club and won some acclaim for his marksmanship, but his true passion was sports. Jason was an avid sports fan and tried his hand at several different venues before settling on baseball as his favorite. He even won a baseball scholarship to the University of Chicago. He played as often as he could and always gave a Herculean effort on the field. This also applied to his social life throughout high school. He was deeply in love with his longtime girlfriend Jessica Sinclair, whom his parents adored. She was a young socialite in the Chicago elite. They stole every moment that they could together and despite his parent’s repeatedly trying to get him to take things slow, wanted nothing more than her love.
Broken Dreams
|
During the summer before he began college, his parents took him to visit Rome. It was at this time that his life took a turn. A local vampire coterie had learned of his father’s assistance to the MM and laid a trap for him. Michael unwittingly led the vampires to his family, who were receiving an after-hours tour of the Coliseum. When the Whitfield’s entered the Coliseum, they were attacked. Michael was murdered buying time for his wife and son to escape. The vampires gave chase, playing games with the pair as they descended upon them. At that moment, the MM cell struck, ripping into the vampires with small arms fire and assailing them with glowing swords. The vampires were caught off-guard, but put up a real fight. Several members of both sides were lost. To Jason’s horror, one of the vampires grabbed Sarah‘s throat and snapped it like a twig. Jason lunged at the creature only to receive a brutal slashing from its unholy claws that knocked him backwards off his feet. The hit had only been a mere glancing blow, but the damage left a scar that even the priestly benedictions could not remove. One of the MM charged the beast only to be ripped in twain, his weapon skittering across the ground to land at Jason’s feet. Jason gripped the glowing battle axe and caught the monster off-guard as the weapon tore through the vampire’s chest, cleaving him in half as well.
The Vigil Calls
|
In the aftermath, Jason was taken to the MM headquarters, where he was informed of the sacrifices that his parents had made for the cause as well as shown the secret will of his parents stating that he should know the truth and given the proper tools with which to arm himself against the darkness. His parents’ fortune was set into a trust for safekeeping and Jason threw himself into the MM with all his heart, learning their methods and mastering the gifts given to them by God. He learned how to destroy the creatures that had killed his parents. Eventually, he yearned to return to Chicago and resume a somewhat normal routine. He contacted the University and was given the scholarship that he had earned earlier, their understanding of his parent’s death allowing him to resume his life. Unfortunately, his seclusion had cost him his beloved girlfriend, but he thought her better for it. He brought with him the battle axe that had slain his mother’s murderer and a scar on his shoulder that would forever remind him of the evil that must be stopped.
Since that time, Jason has once again entered Academia. He is now studying to obtain his Master of Divinity degree at the University of Chicago. He works as a youth counsellor travelling brtween several Catholic Churches in the diocese. He does enjoy playing baseball for the Maroons. It allows him to fulfill his scholarship duties and mpre importantly, leave the worries of the real world behind as he focuses on the game at hand. He hopes that he can balance his hunting, athletics, and school in time....but is settling for just staying alive at the moment.
Confessional
Sins have been committed in the name of God. Many if not all of them were necessary to save lives that would have been lost in time, if not in the moment. I have committed these sins. Confession and guidance help keep me on the path of righteousness. This is a necessary burden that must be borne by the shepherds so as to save the souls of the flock from corruption. This is my duty. Sometimes, when I hear people talking about horrible things in the shadows, I wonder if they’re talking about vampires, werewolves, witches, or perhaps me. It’s a fine line to be the judge, jury and executioner but we are the chosen few, handpicked by God. We take on this burden and pray that someday we won’t have to judge ourselves.
