Setting
Kindred of the East is a campaign setting in Asia for Vampire: The Masquerade. Primarily about the asiatic form of vampire known as Kuei-jin it also includes information about all the Shen(supernatural beings) living or unliving there.

Known as Cathayans or Kuei-jin the Kindred of East Asia are not Cainites.
Kuei-Jin are souls that clawed their way out of hell to pay back a debt of either Dharma or Karma. Rather than seeking to cling to some remnant of Humanity, Kuei-Jin have developed esoteric paths of enlightenment based on ancient Asian philosophies, their development of these pathes is the source of the Kuei-Jin's power rather than their distance in blood from a prehistoric homicidal farmer.
Kuei-Jin are marked as a separate type of entity from Cainites primarily because they do not Embrace rather, each Kuei-Jin is a person who died and then returned from Yomi to the world of the living through sheer strength of will.
History
Kuei-Jin used to be known as Wan Xian, The Ten Thousand Immortals, blessed by heaven to keep the lords of Yomi at bay. Corruption threw the Wan Xian out of the good grace of the August Personage of Jade and he removed their ability to produce chi (life force). As such the Wan Kuei, The Ten Thousand Demons, must feed on other living beings chi. This can be done by eating flesh, drinking blood, inhaling breath or absorbing ambient chi. All depending on the skill and preferens of the Kuei-jin
The splendid archer Yi, founder of the Shih, cursed the Wan Kuei to rot in sunlight.
Dharma
There are five official dharmas as described by Xue, other dharmas exist but they are deemed heretic by the Quincunx. A follower of a heretic dharma does best to keep a low profile when in contact with the five courts lest he not want to be branded akuma.
