Shadow Name:
“/” pronounced “root”
Awakening:
After weeks of careful planning, studying and memorization of photos, blueprints, and information, Rob was ready to execute his plan. Vincent Snowden had an impressive rare coin collection, and the prize was his 1804 silver dollar. While it was normally locked up so tight that he would stand no chance of getting near it, tonight was different. Mr. Snowden would be holding another party for some other collectors who were interested in purchasing other parts of his collection, and he would naturally be showing off his entire set.
He snuck onto the property while the alarm was off to let the caterers in, got onto the roof, and moved to atop the window he had picked out. He disabled the alarm on the window just as the caterer was leaving, and slipped into the currently unused guest bedroom. Now from here he just had to exit the room, go down the hall, take the second right, and the door to the room would be right there. He took a deep breath and opened the door to exit the room.
He *knew* that this hallway should have the same white and gold wallpaper with dark stained wood trim, but instead the hallway was rough hewn stone blocks. But he *knew* this was right somehow. He walked down the hall to take the second right, but the door on his left suddenly caught his attention. It was just a storage closet, but he *knew* he had to go inside. He wasn’t planning on pausing to admire Mr. Snowden’s bed sheets, but it kept him out of sight from the guest who was walking by to use the bathroom.
He decided it was time to leave the closet, and began to head the way he was supposed to until he arrived at the immense iron shod wooden door to the castle he was trying to gain entry into, having a nagging suspicion that something was out of place, but not able to determine what it was. He took his tools out and quickly defeated the large metal lock on the door, and entered the room. Inside he found several pedestals, but one of them was glowing, and the pedestal drew him towards it. Each of the other pedestals had a name on it, but the glowing one was blank. He reached the glowing pedestal and took out his dremel to carve his name into the pedestal. He had made only a single line when the world shifted.
Reeling, he realized where he was. He wasn’t in some castle; he was in the house he was robbing, stealing the coin.
“The coin!” he thought to himself as he looked down at the pedestal in front of him. He had just gouged his dremel into the face of the coin, leaving a large slash in it. Cursing, he grabbed the coin, and fled the house.
Finally arriving back at his home, he took out the coin again to look at it. On the tails side, a pentagram was inscribed, and flipping it over revealed the slash he had made. “Root” he though as he looked at the slash, recalling the symbol he used so often while hacking. He shook his head, wondering how he could have mutilated the coin he had worked so hard to obtain.
An Acanthus Guardian?
/ was contacted by the Guardians after he was awakened. A man (who / did not know was a Guardian at the time) contacted him and he accepted a contract from the man to steal evidence. This evidence turned out to be proof of a mage who had breached the veil. When he returned the documents to the man, he was given the task of killing the mage that had breached the veil. After much forethought, / decided that it must be done. Mages were responsible for their actions. He planned out how he would sneak into the mage’s residence, and several days later he executed his plan. He carefully approached the sleeping mage, opened his knife, and with a shaking hand he plunged it into his back. For his final task, / was ordered to kill the sleeper who had witnessed the breaching of the veil. / decided that killing a human guilty only of being in the wrong place at the wrong time was not something he could do.
Mannerisms
/ will go to great lengths to do what he feels is right. For a friend he trusts, he will risk physical harm. He does not feel bad taking from others what they do not sufficiently defend. When doing something, he gets frustrated if prevented from doing it his way. When not taking care of serious matters, he likes to play games, crack jokes, and make too many technology related metaphors. Giving him chocolate is an excellent way of getting him to do you a favor.
Mortal connections
He let his close friends grow distant; however he still keeps in touch with several internet friends. His employers would submit work to him electronically, so he continued to work in this manner, occasionally meeting with them when required.
Childhood
Rob was a bright kid, a bit of a wise guy, and frequently got into trouble as a little kid, but got good at getting out of trouble as he got older.
Quotes
"In an Order of shadows he is our whisper..." Simon "Chaim" Honeywell
"Nice guy probably the most co-ordinated member of the Golden Tomb, huge geek, but these days that's not always a bad thing." - Rat
"I always er..kinda feel like im erm...interupting some important project. - Agytha "Agydiah" Vogt
"Took a few spitballs, calls for surrender and lots of flowing beer to crack the shell there. Hopefully the future between us is brighter than the computer screen he hides behind." - Kevin "Jarl" Colson, Il Passetto
"Always a gentleman, and I rarely see him without a smile on his face, one that makes me wonder what is behind it. A good sport when fun is in the air too." - Elle "Pix" Cohen
"Root's unwillingness to commit himself to the shared goals of the order make me want to put more than just his loyalty to questioning." - Sean "Abaddon" Delmore
"A never-ending surprise. Root is a gentleman, well-spoken, funny, and does a passable Elvis impersonation. He also has a very clear picture of exactly who he is and does not fall prey to defining himself by the opinions of others. Play on, my friend..." - Calla "Qpid" Rivera, Il Passetto
"He's a Guardian? *laughs* I've known that for a while. We need more of him around, although I'm curious to know where the heck he's been lately. Sometimes being as polite as he is hides something far more sinister, or maybe hides nothing at all." - Dagon -Zoeker- Trepe
